A Place in the Sun’s Jonnie Irwin says boys will ‘grow up not knowing their dad’

A Place in the Sun star Jonnie Irwin has issued a heartbreaking statement after being given six months to live.

The presenter, 48, has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, and recently shared his diagnosis with the public.

He was initially diagnosed in 2020, and admitted he doesn’t know how long he has left.

The cancer, which he received a diagnosis for just a week after wrapping filming for A Place in the Sun in August 2020, has now spread to his brain.

The star told Hello!: “I want to make memories and capture these moments with my family because the reality is, my boys are going to grow up not knowing their dad and that breaks my heart.”

Jonnie now “tries to stay positive”, adding: “My attitude is that I’m living with cancer, not dying from it.”

The travel show presenter shares three-year-old son Rex and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac with his wife Jessica Holmes.

He and Jessica married in 2016, with Jonnie branding his wife the “best human” as he shared a wedding snap of them kissing outside their chosen venue.

In light of his diagnosis, Jonnie added: “One day, this is going to catch up with me, but I’m doing everything I can to hold that day off for as long as possible.

“I owe that to Jess and our boys, Some people in my position have bucket lists, but I just want us to do as much as we can as a family.”

The I Escaped to the Country host said he has “set markers” for things he wants to live through, after originally refusing to plan anything in case he wasn’t well enough to do them.

He is also encouraging fans to take out life insurance, adding that it has “helped him so much” to know that Jess and his sons are living somewhere without a mortgage and with “a bit of money in the bank”.

His fans and co-stars have fully rallied around the star since he shared the news of his diagnosis, with I Escaped to the Country star Nicki Chapman telling him: “Love you guys so much.”
