Freddie Mercury meetings with Royal Family – King Charles 'snub' to Diana rumour

It’s no secret that Freddie Mercury has royal associations; the biggest clue is in his band’s name.

The legendary Queen frontman graced the stage at Wembley Stadium like Queen Elizabeth II when he wore a jewel-encrusted crown and regal red robes.

The renowned rockers even did their own rendition of God Save The Queen at the iconic 1986 gig, leaving no stone unturned in their tributes to the British monarchy.

But Queen fans might be wondering if Freddie ever actually met any royals before his tragic death from AIDS-related illness on November 24, 1991.

With it being more than 30 years since Freddie left us, Daily Star has rounded up the rock god’s rumoured run-ins with the royals.

Freddie and Diana’s big ‘night out’

According to reports, Freddie and Princess Diana once spent a crazy night together – and the late Princess of Wales disguised herself as a man.

It has become something of an urban legend, but the story goes that two of the most famous people on the planet partied it up together at a gay bar in South London.

The pair reportedly became pals and bonded over their shared love for the sitcom The Golden Girls, as well as celebrities like Kenny and Rupert Everett.

Kenny’s friend Cleo Rocos said of one particular afternoon: “The group spent the afternoon drinking champagne in front of reruns of The Golden Girls with the sound turned down and improvising show dialogue with a much naughtier storyline.”

Apparently, the group planned to go to a gay bar called Royal Vauxhall Tavern and Diana wanted to join in on the antics.

Rocos claimed Diana disguised herself as a man in a baseball cap, sunglasses and an army bomber jacket.

He said: “When we walked in … we felt she was obviously Princess Diana and would be discovered at any minute. But people just seemed to blank her. She sort of disappeared. But she loved it.”

But Freddie’s close pal Peter Freestone shut down the rumour, telling Daily Express: “No, not at all. Maybe Diana went with Kenny but Freddie wasn’t there. He never met her.”

However, whether the icons actually hung out or not, it’s surely a night both of them would have enjoyed.

There’s a famous photo of Freddie and Diana cosying up together at an event – but sadly the picture is edited.

The Freddie Mercury Fan Club published the picture and revealed: “I’ve been seeing a lot of photoshopped photos of Freddie with other people where the head has been swopped for someone else.

“In the first photo you can see the real photo of Freddie with Barbara Valentin and then the photoshopped one with Princess Diana which is based on the myth of them meeting and all which most likely never even happened.”

Freddie and Barbara Valentin were definitely friends, though, as they grew close when Mercury was living in Germany.

Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor have rubbed shoulders with the royal family several times, but it seems Freddie wasn’t too fussed.

Brian and Roger played in front of the royals on numerous occasions and headlined the 2002 Diamond Jubilee – and again at the Platinum Jubilee this year.

And in 1985, the pair sat with the now-King Charles and Diana to watch the biggest artists on the planet perform at Live Aid.

Freddie was busy backstage

But Freddie wasn’t there, and it’s claimed the singer was more interested in chatting to his mates and other stars like Elton John backstage.

He told Express: “Even at Live Aid, you see Brian May and Roger Taylor in the royal box. Freddie didn’t go. He was more interested in being with friends backstage, talking with Elton John, hanging out with his people. His friends were always the most important to him.”
