Viewers were left traumatised after the tragic bus crash took place back in 2014 that saw lives hanging in the balance.

The accident happened as residents of Summer Bay piled into a minibus to go and watch Kyle Braxton’s girlfriend Phoebe play a gig in the city.

As the group headed on their way two other intertwining storylines played out involving Sophie and Nate – who begin arguing in their car as they head back to Summer Bay.

The dramatic scene saw her cause a collision which resulted in the bus swerving and then flipping and rolling over and over until it came to a standstill.

Kyle, Hannah Wilson, Denny Miller, Evie MacGuire, Sasha Bezmel, Leah Patterson-Baker and pregnant Ricky Sharpe were all caught up in the horror smash.

Viewers eventually learned that the bulk of the victims escaped with only minor injuries, however, they saw Hannah (Cassie Howarth) face the reality that he may never walk again after being impaled through her spine.

A huge four episodes were dedicated to The Great Storm as a natural disaster struck Summer Bay.

The dramatic run aired from September 5 – 8 2011 and saw bosses go all out for the extravagant plot which was billed as the “biggest stunt/disaster storyline” to ever feature in the soap by producer Cameron Welsh.

The event came during the 24th season of the hit show and saw the cast take part in a series of stunts over the course of an intense 11-day filming schedule.

Special effects deployed to create the shocking scenes included FX, green screen, wind machines and rain machines, which combined with the hours spent on set filming helped the plot to become their most expensive ever.

As the actors set about promoting the huge TV event it was revealed that one character would die – but the spoiler was kept tightly under wraps to keep viewers guessing right up until the death aired.

Characters battled for survival

The storyline saw several key characters involved in their own subplots as they battled to survive the storm, while the bulk of residents of Summer Bay took shelter at Summer Bay High’s evacuation centre.

Fans saw Romeo Smith (Luke Mitchell) attempting to save lives around the Bay, Harvey Ryan (Marcus Graham) and Roo Stewart (Georgie Parker) stranded at sea after their boat capsized,

Elsewhere pregnant Leah Patterson-Baker (Ada Nicodemou) nearly lost her baby and Colleen Smart (Lyn Collingwood), Bianca Scott (Lisa Gormley) and Heath Braxton (Dan Ewing) were trapped underneath a collapsed roof at Summer Bay High.

When the storm eventually passed viewers finally discovered that Tegan Callahan (Saskia Burmeister) had been tragically killed in a car crash.
