Bake Off's Mary Berry 'horrified' over co-star Paul Hollywood's biscuit habit

Bake Off star Paul Hollywood loves dunking all kinds of biscuits and croissants in his tea and coffee.

But he said former co-star Mary Berry “nearly fell off her chair” when she saw him do it.

The Scouser, 56, believes dunking is a northern trait, which is why southerner Mary, 87, right with Paul, was shocked by his antics. Asked if he always dunks, he said: “Oh yeah. Mary was horrified when I dunked a Jaffa Cake. She nearly fell off her chair.

“That’s a class thing though. Because I’m a working-class lad, we dunk. I’d dunk a cake.”

And Paul confessed there is a hierarchy when it comes to dunking, with Hobnobs and Party Rings coming out on top.

He added: “I’ll dunk a croissant in a coffee. I wouldn’t dunk it in a tea, because tea isn’t inherently going to carry a lot of flavour.

“Hobnob or a Party Ring – Party Rings are nice. It’s almost like glacé icing which I really like.

“Nice are a joke – I love them, but as soon as you put them near a cup of tea they’ve fallen in.”

Although Mary no longer works alongside Paul, she previously said that she will always “stand by” her former co-star.

She told Radio Times: “I would always stand by him. Paul and I had our differences about what was important to us but he is a brilliant bread-maker and I admired him a lot.”

Paul Hollywood still appears on the baking show alongside the likes of Prue Leith, Noel Fielding, Sandi Toksvig and, until his recent confirmation of his departure, Matt Lucas.

Matt revealed he would no longer be appearing on the show earlier this week as he sent his goodbye message to his fans and co-stars.

He wrote on Twitter: “Farewell Bake Off! It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers. But it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.

“So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.”

He thanked the production team, his co-stars and the bakers as he wished the best to “whoever takes over”.
