ITV confirm Jeremy Clarkson will stay as host – despite 'awful' Meghan comments

Jeremy Clarkson’s controversial comments on Meghan Markle were “awful”, ITV boss Kevin Lygo has said.

The Top Gear and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? presenter has been under fire since writing in a column in The Sun that he dreamed of the day when Meghan was “made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her”.

According to the BBC, Mr Lygo addressed the remarks at an event in London.

“We hire him as a consummate broadcaster of the most famous quiz on television, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” he was quoted as saying at the Broadcasting Press Guild event in London on Tuesday

“So it’s not quite in our wheelhouse but I don’t know what he was thinking when he wrote that.”

“It was awful,” he added.

However, asked if ITV would keep Jeremy on the game show, he said they would.

Jeremy, 62, has been widely criticised for his column, in which he also said that he hated Prince Harry’s wife on a “cellular level”.

Several MPs and stars have condemned his words and there have been over 12,000 Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) complaints.

The star has also apologised, tweeting: “Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people.

“I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.”

The column has since been taken down.

A statement was posted on The Sun’s website said: “In light of Jeremy Clarkson’s tweet he has asked us to take last week’s column down.”
