LadBaby make Official Christmas Number One history – and apologise to The Beatles

LadBaby have made UK Official Chart history becoming the first-ever act to claim a record five Official Christmas Number One singles.

Earlier this week, the Official Charts revealed that Wham!, Mariah Carey and LadBaby were all in a tight fight for the top spot as the two Christmas classics battled their way to the top.

However, LadBaby, a duo comprising of Mark and Roxanne Hoyle, came out on top with their song Food Aid having shifted a total of over 65,000 chart units and delivered the fastest-selling single of 2022 to date

LadBaby now break a long-held chart record set by The Beatles, after equaling the Fab Four’s total of four Christmas Number 1s last year.

Paul McCartney’s band earned their four Christmas Number 1s non-consecutively in 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1967.

The internet stars surpass The Beatles to undeniably cement their own place in Official Chart history.

Prior to Food Aid, LadBaby enjoyed festive chart-toppers with We Built This City in 2018, I Love Sausage Rolls in 2019, Don’t Stop Me Eatin’ in 2020 and last year’s Ed Sheeran and Elton John collaboration Sausage Rolls For Everyone 2021.

Celebrating their historic achievement, LadBaby told OfficialCharts.com: “I can’t quite believe it! We’re Number 1! The charity has made it five years in a row. How have we done this again?

“We want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us for the last five years.

“A massive apology to The Beatles, and to all The Beatles’ fans…I’m sorry! The charity wins. The Trussell Trust gets Christmas Number 1 again!

“Thank you to all the people who have downloaded, all the people who believed in us and brought a bit of Christmas magic. We love you all. Yes mate!”

Days before the revelation of who is taking home the Christmas Number 1 title, the Official Charts revealed that LadBaby is still ahead for the time being, but the classics could still be in with a chance.

LadBaby’s rise to the top of the charts came after they released a new song with Money Saving Expert’s Martin Lewis to raise money for foodbanks.

Wham! also nearly landed their first Christmas number one

Speaking on the race for Christmas Number One, they revealed they were off to a “modest start” compared to previous years and confessed the crown could be taken home by someone else.

LadBaby – Mark Hoyle – and his wife Roxanne reworked Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? as they attempted their fifth consecutive Christmas number one.

They got the green light from Bob Geldof, Midge Ure and the Band Aid Trust to rework the song which they have titled Food Aid.

Half of the money raised will go to food bank charity the Trussell Trust while the other half will go to the Band Aid Trust.

It comes after LadBaby managed to land four consecutive years in 2021 at the top of the charts breaking a record held by The Beatles and Spice Girls.

In 2021 they got to the top spot with their single Sausage Rolls For Everyone which featured Ed Sheeran and Elton John.
