Call the Midwife star Jenny Agutter makes shock axe admission ahead of series 12

One Call the Midwife star has made one shock confession when it comes to the longevity of the beloved BBC period drama.

Jenny Agutter, 70, has played Sister Julienne since the programme’s inception a decade ago.

Based on the bestselling trilogy of books by Jennifer Worth, the first ever series took place in 1957, while new episodes in 2023 will focus on 1967 and 1968.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping for its February issue about her role in the programme, Jenny admitted she didn’t think the show would last more than one series.

She said: “I didn’t see this happening. I thought we’d do six episodes and that would be it.

“I was sat on a bus once when the woman next to me said, ‘I didn’t want to disturb you, but I have to say, I watch Call The Midwife and I have a particular interest in it because I was a nun for seven years.’ I thought, ‘Oh, my goodness, I’ve been a nun longer than her.’”

Jenny confessed that she has had to “compromise a lot” to be able to carry on her acting work while juggling family life.

She is married to hubby Johan Tham, and they share a son, Jonathan.

She confessed: “Of course, there was guilt. There’s always that niggle that you’re spending too much time away.”

But Jenny said the “rewards” are that she “really enjoys” time at home when she returns from home.

But Helen George, who plays Trixie Franklin, said filming her engagement scenes was slightly chaotic.

The romantic proposal was shot on location near a south London bridge, which was “really lovely”.

But Helen confessed: “There were loads of pubs around us and everyone was absolutely wasted. We we’re trying to be in the moment, but there were all these drunks there! They were screaming obscenities, going, ‘What the f*** is this?’”
