Waterloo Road's Adam Thomas breaks silence on devastating storyline amid return

Waterloo Road’s Adam Thomas has opened up about filming the emotional scenes surrounding the death of Chlo Charles in the first episode of the new series.

Adam who plays Donte Charles in the hit series left the programme in 2009 after three years with his on-screen wife, Chlo (Katie Griffiths) after the pair tied the knot.

However, they both signed up for the reboot of the series after it was announced last year that the BBC drama would be returning to screens and would be set in Manchester once again.

But both Thomas and Grainger were left stunned when they discovered Chlo would be killed off in the first episode – a move which has left fans speechless.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star about the emotional scenes, Adam said: “When Cameron [Roach] first approached us about the show and the storyline of what’s going to happen, I was like ‘What?! The first episode?!’ it’s a bit like Game Of Thrones when Sean Bean’s character dies.

“It’s like ‘how can they do that?’ but there’s also that shock factor as well, I think the audience will not see it coming.

“The fact that she gets ran over and carries on as well and then at the end, it was hard to play, it was quite emotional.”

Adam continued: “I was there with Scarlett [Thomas] and Teddy [Thomas], it was just an emotional scene to do, they were crying, it’s not something you want your kids or little niece to go through.

“But they know that it was all part of the gig, we loved every minute of it – it was just a storyline that nobody ever saw coming.”

While Katie added: “They [Teddy and Scarlett] were pros.”

Speaking about the show returning, Adam said: “When Waterloo Road was back many years ago, I don’t think social media wasn’t as big as it is now, I feel like not many shows on television are as relatable as Waterloo Road is.

“Not only the characters in the show but also the topics that they discuss, the storylines throughout each and every single episode of Waterloo Road – someone will be able to relate.

“I think it’s important to have shows like that for kids to discuss topics that we talk about in Waterloo Road, I think we need shows, a show from Manchester.”

Meanwhile, Katie added: “It’s back to where it started, I think as a show even before all those years ago, it was never scared of addressing real, horrible issues that young people and older people go through every single day.

“There will be a lot of that throughout this series so I think that’s part of the testament as to why fans wanted it to come back.

“While over lockdown, I had no idea how popular it was on iPlayer, it’s found this new surge of energy and it feels like there’s another young fanbase out there that wants to know about these characters, the old characters and new characters, it’s all exciting that it’s come to a head and it’s finally happening.”

Waterloo Road airs at 8pm on BBC One with all episodes now available on BBC iPlayer.
