Olivia Colman, 48, left 'embarrassed' over sex scenes with co-star Micheal Ward, 25

Olivia Coleman was reportedly “embarrassed” when she had to film sex scenes with co-star Micheal Ward – who is 23 years younger.

The 48-year-old award-winning actress stars in the new romance drama, Empire Of Light alongside 25-year-old Michael.

The film, directed by Sam Mendes, is set in Margate in the 1980s and follows Olivia’s character Hilary, a cinema manager who develops a relationship with her employee Stephen, played by Michael.

However, it seems, Olivia, whose career spans two decades, was left rather red-faced while filming certain scenes for the movie.

Speaking on Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, the film’s director Sam revealed: “She [Olivia] was very embarrassed about performing the sex scenes, as is often the case.

“You’re seeing people at their rawest, at their most emotionally vulnerable.”

He continued: “It’s like anything, you’re trying to push a little further into the places that you’re not normally allowed to go into, you’re going behind the curtain as it were, and I wanted to see their physical desire.”

Olivia herself recently reflected on filming the sex scenes with Michael, admitting she was left mortified after they shot one particular raunchy scene.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show last month, The Crown star said: “There was one particular moment when I was astride Micheal in a compromising and slightly embarrassing situation, and he said, ‘It’s my mum’s birthday today. When he said she was 43, I was like, “OK, stop talking!'”

Micheal, whose breakout role was in Top Boy, also gushed about his costar saying it was an “incredible” experience to appear alongside Olivia.

He added: “If Olivia had been rude I might have thought that’s how I need to be to reach a certain level of success, but the fact she is so lovely showed me I can be a good person and still be successful.”

Olivia has also admitted that she had originally wanted the sex scenes cut from the film.

“I always wanted Sam to take out the sex scenes because I was so embarrassed.”

Via FilmNews, she continued: “I said, ‘Why can’t they go for the kiss, and cut, and then pretend that it had already happened?’”
