Police Academy actor George R Robertson dies aged 89 as fans pay tribute to star

Police Academy star George R Robertson has sadly died at the age of 89, his family has confirmed.

The actor played Chief Hurst in six of the Police Academy movies, with his character being the old guard who was waiting for the days when the cops “all had Johnsons”.

George’s family has confirmed that he died at Toronto hospital on Sunday (January 29) and that his memorial will take place in March.

Paying tribute, one fan said: “RIP George. My childhood self hurts with this news,” as another said: “Aww. I have been watching Police Academy 2 as we speak.”

The Canadian actor, who was born April 20, 1933, also played a White House Man in the 1991 movie JFK, and President Davis in 1995’s National Lampoon’s Senior Trip, among other roles.

His first role was in the 1968 flick Rosemary’s Baby, in which he played Lou Comfort, however he was uncredited for it.

The actor’s most recent role was as Chester Jones in Still Mine in 2012, alongside Succession star James Cromwell.

And while he didn’t win any major awards, three films he starred in were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars: Airport (1970), Norma Rae and JFK (both 1991).

George was a prize-winning athlete at school before he moved to the US to attend Columbia University, which is where he met his future wife Adele.

The couple was married for 61 years until his death last weekend.

George achieved a master’s degree in business, however he was drawn to acting and went to work in theatre.

He then picked up small movie roles in the 1960s and ’70s but became a familiar face in the 1980s when he landed his role as Chief Hurst.

His character worked his way up the ranks during the Police Academy movies and was eventually made Commissioner.

However he chose not to appear in the seventh movie – Police Academy: Mission to Moscow.
