Naga Munchetty admits 'I should show more emotion' as BBC star forced to defend himself

BBC Breakfast star Naga Munchetty admitted she should “show more emotion” while speaking to a wildlife photographer on Thursday’s instalment of the morning programme.

The presenter, 47, took up her regular spot on the red sofa alongside co-host Charlie Stayt and spoke to Doug Allen who worked alongside Sir David Attenborough on the most recent series of Frozen Planet.

The trio looked at the dramatic footage from the BBC series which showed killer whales using a rare hunting technique to trap and kill a seal in the icy waters surrounding Antarctica.

The cameraman was present during filming, revealing they captured footage with remote cameras from the safety of an inflatable boat as opposed to going into the icy water.

Referring to the haunting scenes of the whales hunting the seals, Naga admitted: “I feel so sorry for them,” before Charlie asked Doug: “Is there a bit of you as you’re filming it thinking, ‘Oh, I know what’s going to happen?'”

As the footage continued to play on screen, Doug explained the whale’s actions were so predictable that they could spot a seal half a mile away and set the camera up because they knew it would be a target.

He added: “You’re looking like I should feel sorry for it…”

Quickly defending himself, Charlie responded: “No no, it’s not a judgement on you at all! It’s just human instinct isn’t it?”

The cameraman told the duo you have to be “amazed” by the complexity of the whale’s behaviour, before assuring it’s all completely natural.

He continued: “I’m more concerned about what we as humans are doing to animals.”

“You’re right,” Naga agreed before saying: “But they’re so cute and you see it just looking there going, ‘I’m a goner’.”

The wildlife photographer responded: “Well if the tears in your eyes meant that you lost focus then you’d be in a real problem.”

“There you go. I should show more emotion,” joked the newsreader.

Doug then revealed his big break came when the 96-year-old broadcaster came to his base when he was working as a biologist, admitting that’s when he realised he wanted to be in his film crew.
