Love Island disasters – overnight break in, sickness bugs and 'mysterious' bruises

Love Island has been hit with a number of disasters since ITV first started filming the dating show.

As it’s grown in popularity changes have been put in place to keep the contestants and the crew safe, but sometimes things manage to slip through the net.

Safety isn’t their only concern – the show is planned to a T, but when you’re dealing with real people rather than paid actors, sometimes things can go array.

As Love Island continues to air the second ever series of the winter version, Daily Star looks back at some of the challenges bosses have been hit with.

Intruders

Love Island bosses regularly have to deal with intruders, with ex contestant Alex Miller previously stating that guards told him five people per day would try to break in.

But in 2021, someone was successful and managed to break into the villa during filming.

YouTube prankster Omer Majid filmed himself breaking into the famous villa and through a corridor before a voice could be heard saying: “You’re trespassing”.

He previously told Daily star that he had “planned it” for a while and found the area through online searches.

He explained that he had driven for around five hours the day before to scout the location and find an entry – but he said it was incredibly secure.

Although he failed to get too close to the islanders, the break in to the grounds took place while they were asleep, and he was safely escorted out of the villa.

Sickness bug

This year islanders and producers have reportedly been struck down with a “nasty” stomach bug.

The illness is said to have torn its way through set in the early weeks of the show with a source telling The Sun at the time: “Love Island might look very sexy on the television but behind the scenes there has been a bug going around.

“As well as rushing to the Beach Hut for a chat, the islanders have also been dashing off to use the loo.

“It has been pretty rough for some of them. Some of the production team have also been affected by the sickness bug.”

Mysterious bruises

Concern has been raised for islanders in the past over mysterious bruises cropping up – but it’s often because the contestants have fallen or bumped into something behind the scenes.

One particular occasion took place when Chloe Burrows had a bright red mark on her hip, prompting many to take to Twitter to question whether she is ok.

Chloe’s family spoke out on the incident as they said: “She bruises like an absolute peach.

“She fell over messing about and that’s how she hurt her hip, she’s okay. Apparently she walked into a tree the other day [laughing emoji].”

Last-minute exit

Liberty and Jake decided to leave the villa days before the final

Love Island bosses were hit with a shock when mere days before the final Liberty Poole and Jake Cornish called time on their romance.

Moments away from the public vote the pair decided to quit the villa which caused bosses to scrap the vote instead.

As the pair made the decision between them, Liberty said: “I am literally so happy for every single one of them that they have been able to find someone for them. But I am going to leave today anyway because that is the right choice for me.”

Jake responded: “I feel exactly the same. I am not going to let you walk out on your own. It is as simple as that. I think the best thing is that we end on good terms and be friends and say we tried.”
