A Place in the Sun’s Jean Johansson left fans baffled with her first property choice after a house-hunter admitted they didn’t want too many stairs in their dream home.
Couple Inge and Rick were looking for a holiday home in the sun-kissed Coral Bay in Cyprus to help improve their arthritis and they told Jean what they were hoping to get with their £260,000 budget.
“Two to three bedroom, a bit of land, a pool is a must, a few fruit trees would be nice and somewhere to grow some veg in the summer,” Rick went through the wish list.

“I’d like a man cave. Minimum number of stairs, I’m not saying no stairs, just a minimum number, we both have arthritis so it makes life a lot easier.”
Jean took them to the traditional village of Kathikas for a three-bedroom detached villa.
So Rick was quick to notice the man cave as they stood by the swimming pool, next to a patio and a low-maintenance garden.
The house came with three floors – including a utility room and a studio on the ground floor, a kitchen-living room on first floor, and the three bedrooms on the second floor.
After a quick browse, Rick and Inge were very happy about the property, but the husband remarked: “Apart from the stairs, but I think that’s overcome-able, it ticks every box.”
Jean reacted: “I did take your condition into account, you said you didn’t mind a few stairs, so I thought I’d show you one with some stairs and see how you might cope with them.”
But viewers were shocked by Jean’s property choice.
One noted: “That man looks like he’d struggle with a three-storey house.”
“Has a problem with stairs, so obviously here’s a property with three flights of stairs,” another wrote.
A third also added: “‘Not too many stairs please’ – and first place has loads of them.”
A fourth commented: “He said right at the start that stairs were an issue, so why is she only now taking that into account?!”
