Richard Williams has defended Will Smith’s Oscars slap, with him urging the world to “forgive him”.
Last year during the Oscars, which took place on March 27, 2022, Hollywood actor Will slapped Chris Rock after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance.
And now Richard, the father of tennis world champions Serena and Venus Williams has spoken in an interview with Good Morning Britain, with him defending Will.

Breaking his silence to defend Will, who portrayed the 81-year-old in the Oscar-winning biopic King Richard, the American tennis coach has said: “I’ll always stand by him.”
Chatting candidly on the ITV1 morning programme, Richard added: “I think he has done the best thing he needed to do, but I would never be disgusted with Mr Smith. Matter of fact, I appreciate Mr Smith.”
Richard was asked if he saw any “wrongdoing” at the Oscars, with him replying: “I don’t see nothing wrong with that.”
He went on to add: “I don’t feel sorry for no one,” in relation to Chris getting slapped, urging: “It’s time for everyone to forgive Will Smith.”
The Louisiana-born dad-of-five even suggested the violence was justified because of the inappropriate joke that Chris made about Will’s wife.
The world-famous tennis coach continued: “I’m 81-years-old but when I was about 51-years or younger, I almost killed any damn one, so I think Mr Smith done a great deal not to.”
Calling for Will’s Oscars ban to be lifted, he also went on to say: “I’ll say my message to Mr Smith right now.
“Thank you very much for being so good-looking, so handsome!”
Last year while hosting the Oscars, Chris joked: “Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,” which referred to Jada’s shaved head.
Will then leapt out of his seat, walked up on stage and slapped Chris, which left the comedian saying: “Wow! Wow. Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me.”
Good Morning Britain weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
