Hollyoaks star quit Channel 4 soap to become roofer and 'hates being recognised'

Former Hollyoaks star Alfie Browne-Sykes has opened up about life after the show – revealing that he hates it when people recognise him.

The 28-year-old played Jason Roscoe for three years on the hit Channel 4 soap before quitting in 2016 and has since become a roofer.

And now, the former soap star has spoken out about leaving the show, revealing that the pandemic made it tough to pursue acting roles.

Appearing on Joseph James’s Just Real Podcast, Alfie said: “Going to work every day, working on people’s roofs and them recognising you from Hollyoaks is a hard thing to deal with at first – especially when they make comments and don’t realise what they are saying to you.”

After leaving Hollyoaks, Alfie bagged a part in the Tracy Beaker spin-off Dumping Ground in 2017 followed by a theatre stint in war drama Birdsong.

However, Alfie found his work was drying up and, as a result, his mental health started to suffer and he “lost all sense of direction”.

Talking about his career ambitions, he said: “I’m just trying to crack on with my acting, trying to pursue that career.

“It’s a lot tougher than people think. It’s a lot of waiting for the right opportunities to pop, especially with all the s*** at the minute.”

During his stint on the show, Alfie struck up a relationship with co-star Amanda Clapham.

Alfie shot to fame on the Chanel 4 soap

They became a real-life couple after their characters Holly Cunningham and Jason Roscoe got together on the Channel 4 soap.

However, the two split after six years together in October 2019.

In May 2020 it was reported Alfie, 25, moved out of the house they shared in Liverpool.

“The relationship just ran its course – they didn’t want to make a big fuss or announce it publicly,” a source claimed to The Sun.

Alfie reportedly took their French bulldog Frankie with him.

Their characters on the Channel 4 soak struck up a romance as teenagers, but Holly strayed from the garden path and decided to play away with Jason’s on-screen teen brother Robbie.

They did however still get married – but things took a nosedive when the affair came out during the wedding.
