BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood and Jon Kay 'replaced' in huge presenter shake-up

BBC Breakfast kicked off the week with a major shake-up as both Jon Kay and Carol Kirkwood were absent from the programme.

Sally Nugent normally hosts the show with co-star Jon from Monday to Wednesday every week, but he was missing from the from red sofa on Monday morning (March 20).

The 53-year-old was replaced by Ben Thompson who joined forces with Sally, 51, to take viewers through the top headlines of the day.

And Jon wasn’t the only familiar face missing from the studio as beloved meteorologist Carol was also nowhere to be seen for the first instalment of the week.

Stepping in for the Scottish star was fellow weather presenter Matt Taylor, who no doubt delighted Brits when he revealed highs of 15 degrees across some parts of the country.

Presenter shake-ups are a regular occurrence on BBC Breakfast as just last month, Naga Munchetty missed her three day slot for two weeks.

The 48-year-old typically helms the morning programme alongside Charlie Stayt from Thursday to Saturday, but was nowhere to be seen at the end of February and beginning of March.

She was first replaced by business correspondent Nina Warhurst, while the following week it was rarely-seen star Rachel Burden who joined Charlie on the red sofa.

Sharing their thoughts on Naga’s absence, fans took to social media as one penned: “Finally the Best of the best, we love Nina, but there is only ONE ROGER JOHNSON.”

“A very good Saturday morning to Roger and Nina. Lovely to see your smiling faces bringing us the news from the world famous BBC Breakfasts red sofa,” added another viewer.

A third gushed: “Love these two presenters a they bring charm & humanity to the unpleasant news they have to deliver.”

It was not known why Naga was unable to host the show, but many BBC Breakfast hosts like Naga have busy broadcasting schedules and therefore can’t always host the show.

As well as BBC Breakfast, Naga hosts her own Radio 5 Live phone-in show from Monday to Wednesday, where she chats to viewers about the latest issues facing the country.
