Online trolls wrote hateful messages about Shirley, with them questioning her decisions on the show and took aim at her appearance.
Speaking to the Mirror, Shirley spoke of her struggles towards the end of last year when she told of how the abuse was “out of control” and impacted her negatively.
She said: “At one point I had thousands of messages coming in if I sent someone home. Some of the messages were truly awful.”
The brunette beauty, who replaced Len Goodman as head judge on the show in 2017, also spoke of being “embarrassed about being so emotional” about the trolling she was receiving.
She went on to explain that the BBC did offer her support and counselling to deal with the trolling, and checked in on her even when she didn’t want to talk to anybody about it.
Taking a break after the Strictly tour to focus on her other projects and looking after herself, Shirley wanted to keep out of the limelight for a little while.
Asked by the paper if she’d go back to the BBC One dancing competition as a judge later this year, Shirley said: “I always take one step at a time.
“I absolutely love the job. If it was just that, and there was nothing else surrounding it, I can’t think of a more rewarding job to do.”
