Real Housewives star told she'd 'get cancer' as vile trolls threatened her children

Real Housewives of Toronto alum Kara Alloway was targeted by vile trolls who told her she’d “get cancer” and threatened her three children.

The reality TV star became the ‘villain’ of the show pretty quickly, which she puts down to producer meddling and “cherry picking” during the editing process.

Now she’s written a fiction book, Most Hated, based somewhat on her own experiences in the realm of reality TV, after growing “alligator skin” to protect her from the haters.

Opening up in an exclusive chat with Daily Star, Kara said: “There were some really mean messages. I had one woman saying, ‘Your husband will leave you, something bad will happen to your kids, and you’ll get cancer’.

“I remember going, ‘It’s just a show! Why would you say that to someone?’

“Then there’s my mum telling me, ‘Kara, hurt people, hurt people’. But who goes and writes that out? You have to write that out, it’s not like you just blurted out something brash. You have to think it, write it, send it.

“This was just a show meant to entertain and provide some escapism.”

And, Kara explained, plenty of her most famous lines came down to the editing process once filming wrapped.

“You know that producers are playing with you,” she said. “The first day of filming I wanted to tell them, ‘My bulls**t detector is off the charts!’

Kara slammed the editing of the reality show after her words were ‘cherry picked’

“[Producers] would say, ‘Oh my gosh you look so beautiful, I feel like I’m watching the creation of a new star!’ Like, okay guys I know you make reality television and you want my trust, but I’ll only trust you to this level.”

Kara confessed: “I thought I was so prepared for what was coming down the pipe at me, but first of all you can never be prepared for the edit.

“It really hit me when I was walking into a scene one time wearing these really high heels and I was tottering a little. I said, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m going to look like I’m drunk.’

“One of the cameramen stopped and said, ‘Oh don’t worry, they’ll speed up your walk in the edit.’

“That was the first time it hit me, because I was being so careful with what I was saying, choosing words I never considered using.

“And it all came down to cherry picking.”

She added: “One of my famous lines in the show is, ‘Come after me and I’ll stand my ground, come after my kids and flames will shoot out of my nose.’

“That was edited to make me look like some sort of psycho, saying, ‘Come after me and flames will shoot out of my nose’.”

Now Kara is exposing her real life experiences in the form of a fiction book.

“We have six women,” she explained of her debut novel Most Hated, “who are involved in a reality television show.

“That’s the backdrop for all of the things that play out. I got to peel back the curtain a little so readers can say, ‘Wow, does that actually happen on reality TV?'”

Kara’s novel Most Hated is available to pre-order now.
