A Harry Potter TV series has been confirmed by HBO Max, with author J. K. Rowling serving as executive producer on the show.
The live-action series is set to be a “decade-long” project based on all seven Harry Potter books, published between 1997 and 2007.
Describing the series, HBO Max – now renamed Max – explained in a press release: “The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”

The streaming service claimed each season will be “authentic” to the original books adding: “The original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”
Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, added: “We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way.
“Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World.
“In partnership with Warner Bros Television and JK Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

Speaking of the project, bestselling author J. K. Rowling said she was “looking forward” to working on the latest adaptation of her books.
“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” the 57-year-old said.
The Harry Potter film franchise became a cultural phenomenon and catapulted stars Danielle Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson to global stardom.
Kicking off in 2001, eight films were made based on the seven books, with the final instalment; Deathly Hallows: Part 2 released in 2011.
In 2021, the cast reunited for the Harry Potter 20th anniversary: Return to Hogwarts programme which featured the star-studded cast as they reminisced on their time working on the films.
While most of the cast returned, J. K. Rowling decided she didn’t want to feature because the reunion was based on the films and not the books.
But while many fans will be ecstatic at a new Harry Potter adaptation, others weren’t so happy and shared their thoughts online.
“Faithful”? Because the beloved, wildly successful and fan-adored movies weren’t? Talk about revisionist history. Who asked for this?,” fumed one fan.
Another exclaimed: “I won’t be watching – the films were great and the cast cannot be beaten.”
A third questioned: “Why?? The films are some of the greatest book-to-screen adaptations of all time. They are iconic, and it’s absolutely insane to remake them into a series.”
