I’m A Celeb’s Paul Burrell wants to ‘be there for dads struggling with their sexuality’

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’s Burrell reckons I’m A Celebrity made him a big hit with the public.

The former royal butler was amazed at the reaction he got after he first competed on the show in 2004.

He told Daily Star: “I went into the jungle as Princess Diana’s former butler and I came out as Paul Burrell. From that point onwards, I realised I had to be me.

“It made me a household name. I can remember going to my local supermarket to get the groceries and being mobbed. I was floored next to the frozen peas.”

Paul signed up for the new all-stars series just a few years after coming out as gay.

He added: “This time I want to be there for all the dads out there who are struggling with their sexuality.

Paul stated his appearance on the upcoming show which is based in South Africa will de dedicated “for dads struggling with their sexuality”.

The ITV series return to screens next week, with the Paul joining stars such as boxer Amir Khan, Coronation Street’s Helen Flanagan and Diversity dancer Jordan Banjo.

Paul, 64, finished runner-up in the 2004 series of the show.

He explained: “I loved doing it the first time around and to be asked again is very special.”

“It’s like coming into the final of the jungle Olympics. I had to eat kangaroo testicles in Australia, and I am expecting everything to be bigger in South Africa.”

Though he thinks things will be “different” this time around as he is a “different person now”.

He added: “I was a married guy with two kids, and now 19 years on, I am a married man again, but this time around, I have a husband.

“I have many more things to talk about in South Africa.”

Paul also admitted that the show’s medical check helped save his life amid his cancer diagnosis.

Talking on ITV’s Lorraine, Paul explained: “That show, I’m A Celebrity, literally saved my life. Because I went for the medical [and] they found a raised PSA level. I went to my GP and I said to him, ‘Am I still able to do the show?’ And he said, ‘Look, this can wait until you get back [from filming] and when you get back, we’ll continue with the investigations’.

“So when I got back, then I had an MRI scan and then I had a biopsy and then they told me that I had cancer, and then I had to go on the path of treatment.”

I’m A Celebrity… South Africa launches on ITV1 and ITVX on Monday, April 24 at 9pm.
