Dame Edna star Barry Humphries breaks silence after being rushed to hospital

Barry Humphries has thanked fans for their support after being rushed to hospital.

The 89-year-old comedian, known for bringing the role of Dame Edna Savage to life, was admitted to hospital following complications from a recent hip operation.

According to recent reports, the star was in a “serious” condition and was “being kept comfortable” with family at his bedside.

However, the family have now issued a statement which read: “Barry would like to thank everybody for the support and best wishes he has received but he would like more and more.”

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford recently gave an update on Barry’s condition after the Australian star’s health deteriorated.

On Wednesday (April 19), the reporter admitted that “things are tough” as he asked Australians to send the TV legend their love.

He also told viewers on Australia’s Channel Seven’s Sunrise programme that Barry won’t give up.

He previously said: “Barry won’t give up easily. Barry has something marked on his calendar and that is to say he’ll be back on stage before the end of the year.

“He’s been travelling around the UK last year doing a one man show, largely sitting in a chair and talking about the great characters he’s created through the years.”

The reporter added that “it’s not over until it’s over” but also mentioned that “Barry’s health has worsened in the last week”.

Asked how long he thinks Barry would be hospitalised for, the reporter said things were currently “up in the air” while stating that there are very serious concerns over his health at the moment.

But despite the reports, Barry’s wife Lizzie Spender told Sunday Morning Herald: “He’s fine.”

The news of Barry’s recent hospital dash comes after he revealed he was in “agony” following a fall at his home in February which left him in need of a hip replacement.

Barry confirmed that the accident took place after he accidentally tripped on a rug while reaching for a book.

The star was readmitted to St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney earlier this week due to complications.
