Quentin Tarantino spat in Uma Thurman’s face and choked her with a chain – because he didn’t trust others to do the job.
But he doesn’t have any regrets, insisting it was ‘natural’ for him to step in, claiming it was the only way to make the scenes in Kill Bill as authentic as they could possibly be.
Uma, who turns 53 today (April 29), said the director spat on her and choked her for two scenes in the action movie in which she plays revenge-fuelled badass, ‘The Bride’.

But he later defended his actions, explaining how they came about.
On the spitting, he said he didn’t trust Michael Madsen to “nail” it and wanted to get it over and done with as quickly as possible to make things less horrible for his leading lady.
Tarantino, 60, told Deadline: “Naturally, I did it. Who else should do it? So I asked Uma. I said, ‘I think I need to do it. I’ll only do it twice, at the most, three times.
But I can’t have you laying here, getting spit on, again and again and again, because somebody else is messing it up by missing.’ It is hard to spit on people, as it turns out.”
He claimed that Uma even suggested a fourth take after enduring the first three.
As for the choking, he said “it was Uma’s suggestion”.
He added: “To just wrap the thing around her neck, and choke her. Not forever, not for a long time. But it’s not going to look right.”
Tarantino claimed Uma said: “I can act all strangle-ey, but if you want my face to get red and the tears to come to my eye, then you kind of need to choke me.”
He continued: “I was the one on the other end of the chain and we kind of only did it for the close ups. And we pulled it off. Now, that was her idea. Consequently, I realise… that is a real thing.”
It’s not the first time Tarantino has got physical with an actress.
In 2009, he also said he choked actress Diane Kruger for 30 seconds, with her consent, on the set of Inglourious Basterds.
