One of Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries has finally been solved, as a girl missing since 2017 has been found safe after almost six years.
Kayla Unbehaun was just nine years old when she was abducted from her home in South Elgin, Illinois. Her mother allegedly took her on a camping trip and never returned.
Her father Ryan Iserka was due to pick her up from her mother’s home after the trip as her mum did not have rights to Kayla’s custody – but she never returned.

Her mum Heather Unbehaun had wiped all of her social media profiles and turned off her phone, and nobody could track her down.
A GoFundMe set up to help Ryan search for his missing daughter reported: “As far as we know, no one has been able to reach her or has talked to her since the 4th of July [in 2017].”
But now Kayla has been found safe after a store owner in North Carolina recognised her from the Netflix episode.
The owner of a Plato’s Closet called the police, who arrested Kayla’s mother.
Her father said in a statement shared via the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children: “I’m overjoyed that Kayla is home safe.
“I want to thank [the Elgin, Ill., police and fire departments], the National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children and all of the law enforcement agencies who assisted with her case.
“We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning.”
Now 15, Kayla was placed in the care of North Carolina Division of Social Services and will soon be reunited with her family at home in Illinois.
Mum Heather is now facing child abduction charges and was released on bail on Tuesday (May 16). It is not known whether she has entered a plea or retained a lawyer.
