ITV stars ‘gutted’ as long-running reality show cancelled to make room for Big Brother

The ITV Weekender reality series has been cancelled after ten years on air, leaving the cast “gutted” as ITV makes way for the Big Brother comeback instead.

The popular reality series covered guests visiting and the staff working in some of Europe’s popular party destinations including Ibiza, Magaluf and Kavos.

The reasons behind ITV’s decision for cancelling the party series, which has been on air since 2003, is alleged to be the channel focusing on the relaunch of Big Brother as it comes back on air this summer.

ITV Weekender is thought to be among a number of shows being cancelled due to the reality competition returning to air, as ITV relaunches it years after it was aired on Channel 5 and Channel 4.

The decision to axe ITV Weekender has reportedly devastated the cast, as a source told The Sun: “The cast were recently informed that planned filming later this year has now been cancelled and the show won’t be coming back.

“They’re all gutted as many of them have been on it for years and it’s always been such a popular format.

“ITV2 have had to make some difficult decisions with the return of Big Brother taking up a big portion of the schedule later in the year, and it looks like the Weekender series is one of those casualties.

“Obviously in telly land shows can always be resurrected, so it’s not necessarily gone forever, but for the foreseeable future it’s off the cards.”

Earlier this year ITV was promoting ITV Weekender ahead of its new series in Kavos, as the show said: “The programme guarantees the ups and downs, romances and tongue-in-cheek adventures of a holiday in one of the nation’s favourite holiday hotspots.”

Satmohan Panesar, Commissioning Editor, Factual Entertainment at ITV also added: “We’ve missed the high jinks of our reps and holidaymakers – Kavos is the perfect destination to get back to the party.”
