Phillip Schofield’s brother sentenced to 12 years in jail for child sex charges

Phillip Schofield’s brother Timothy Schofield has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for child sex charges.

He must also sign the sex offender register for the rest of his life, and is banned from working with children and vulnerable adults.

The 54-year-old showed no sign of emotion as he was taken down.

The judge told Schofield: “Doing what you did you thought only of yourself. Only of yourself.”

Timothy was convicted of 11 sexual offences involving a child, including two charges of sexual activity with a child, between the period of October 2016 and October 2019.

Prior to the news breaking of his offences, Timothy was a civilian police worker from Bath, Somerset.

After he was arrested and charged, he was suspended without notice from his job at the force’s headquarters in Portishead.

While giving evidence, he told the jury that he had watched pornography with the victim, who he claimed was over the age of 16 at the time.

He also claimed that they masturbated next to each other but denied ever performing sexual acts on the teen.

The jury found him guilty on all counts with a majority vote of 10-2, taking five-and-a-half hours to deliberate.

In a statement after the verdict, Phillip Schofield said: “As far as I am concerned, I no longer have a brother.” The presenter also added his brother had committed a “despicable” crime.

During the trial Phillip told Exeter Crown Court his brother had confessed to him about his acts in September 2021.

In his statement, Phillip said he was washing up when his brother said to him: “You are going to hate me for what I am about to say.

“I said there was nothing he could say that would make me hate him. Then he said that he and [the boy] had time together and that last year they had watched porn… and [masturbated].

“I turned and said, ‘What did you just say?’ He said it was last year and we were alone together.

“Tim said it was just this once. I told him it should never happen again.

“He then started to tell me about [the boy’s] body.

“I said, ‘F***, stop’. I shouted at Tim that he had to stop. I didn’t want to know any of the details but he made it sound like a one-off.

“I said, ‘I don’t want you to tell me any more’. I said, ‘You’ve got to stop, just never do it again. Regardless how that happened it must never happen again’.

“Tim would say it was just ‘[boy] time’.

“I said, ‘What the hell is [boy] time?'”

Before Tim told Phil the news, Phil said he was in a “state”.

Phillip added: “Tim was in an extreme state of agitation, and he said that he was on the verge of killing himself. He said his head was in a mess.”

Schofield’s employer, Avon & Somerset Police, said it would now start misconduct proceedings against him.

Schofield was suspended from duty in December 2021 when the criminal proceedings started.
