Foo Fighters announce new drummer in video teaser after Taylor Hawkins’ tragic death

A new drummer has been announced for Foo Fighters’ new line-up after the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.

The star suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while on tour with his co-stars, and was found to have a severely enlarged heart.

Now Josh Freese will be taking up the position of drummer, with the band confirming the huge news in a livestream on Sunday (May 21).

The teaser video saw a variety of famous cameos, with Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chad Smith making an entrance only to claim he was being blocked in at the car park.

Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee appeared with a food delivery, before Tool drummer Danny Carey popped in with a pair of poodles.

And finally, Freese could be seen exasperated behind a drum kit, yelling: “Excuse me! Could we just, like… play a song?”

Freese, 50, has a whole list of credits to his name. He played drums on Evanescence hit Bring Me to Life, along with Meredith Brooks’ song B*tch, and has contributed to records by Bruce Springsteen, Lana Del Rey and Guns N’ Roses.

His first show with the band will take place in New Hampshire on May 24 before they head out on a global tour.

But Freese has performed with Foo Fighters before, stepping in for Hawkins at his memorial concert last year and using Taylor’s drums.

He explained: “I was asked what drums I’d like to use. Without hesitation I said, ‘Taylor’s drums need to be up there and I want to play on his exact set-up.’”

The band vowed to keep going after the death of Hawkins, who was found dead in his hotel room.

A toxicology report sampling Hawkins’ urine revealed that the star had at least 10 substances in his body when he died suddenly in Colombia, including traces of marijuana, opioids, tricyclic antidepressants and benzodiazepines.

However, his friends said they didn’t trust the toxicology report released by authorities, with Chad ‘Yeti’ Ward confirming: “Taylor never played f***ed up in his life.

“He always played sober as can be. That was a show day. So for somebody to say that he was doing drugs that day, that is just about the most false thing anybody could ever say about him.”
