Maid Marian and her Merry Men cast now – death, ‘bullying’ claims and ditching fame

Blackadder legend Sir Tony Robinson recently made a return as Baldrick for a BBC Comic Relief sketch earlier this year – and has since teased the return of another of his classic shows too.

Speaking to The Sun, the actor revealed that his beloved children’s series Maid Marian might be making a return.

He said: “A company I have worked with before has bought the rights to Maid Marian and Her Merry Men from me.

“We are in the process of creating a version of the original for television.”

With news that the beloved series Maid Marian and Her Merry Men could make a return to our screens, Daily Star has taken a look at where the cast is now, more than three decades later.

Kate Lonergan – Marian

Kate Lonergan played the fearless Marian in the beloved children’s series, leading her band of Merry Men on their quests against the Sheriff of Nottingham – and becoming a TV icon in the process.

Prior to the role, Kate had appeared in The Tall Guy and Terry and Julian.

From there she starred in Heartbeat as Gwen Harding, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates as Dawn Halliwell and Ahead of the Class as Maxine Horley – along with roles in Casualty and The Bill.

Her last credited acting role was in a 2007 episode of Doctors according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), with Kate reported to have since retired from acting.

In 2011 she set up her own gardening company called Blackheath Windowbox Company, according to The Sun.

Speaking to The Guardian about her decision to give up acting to become a gardener, Kate said it was “a natural transition”, but that she has fond memories of working on Maid Marian.

“When I gave up acting to become a garden designer, there were a lot of articles about ‘the maid leaving Sherwood Forest to work among plants.’

“In some ways, though, it felt like a natural transition. My dad had been a gardener and I did it as a hobby when I wasn’t acting. Eventually, it felt right to go full-time.”

She added: “But Marian was great fun. I mean, what other job lets you go to the loo on a big hill overlooking the Devon coast, and then ask: ‘What are we doing today? Oh yeah, having a sword fight and jumping off trees attached to ropes.'”

Away from the limelight, Kate tends to keep her personal life private.

Adam Morris – Robin

Adam Morris played the lovable Robin in Maid Marian – with his comical twist on Robin making him an instant fan-favourite.

After making appearances in Men Behaving Badly, Inspector Morse and Black Books, Adam has not left our screens – starring in Doctors, Holby City, I Dream, The Sister and Genie in the House – as well as theatre productions such as Spiral and The Perfect Murder.

He most recently starred in Sister Boniface Mysteries and Nolly in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Like his Maid Marian co-star Kate, Adam tends to keep his personal life private and not much is known about the star away from our screens.

Tony Robinson – The Sheriff

Sir Tony Robinson is a TV icon and the creator of Maid Marian and her Merry Men, where he starred as The Sheriff of Nottingham.

The beloved star began his career on stage and screen during the seventies, but rose to fame as Baldrick in 1983’s The Black Adder – a role he reprised in subsequent series of the comedy.

From there he appeared in Nellie the Elephant, Minder, The Young Ones, lent his voice to TV series Airline and branched out into presenting, as he fronted the popular historical documentary series Time Team.

He has continued to front multiple documentaries including Around The World By Train With Tony Robinson, Tony Robinson’s Museum Of Us and most recently, Britain on Film in 2022 – to name a few.

In his personal life, Tony has two children and was previously married to Mary Shepherd between 1972 to 1992.

He later married Louise Hobbs in 2011.

Tony is also an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society and made a documentary called Me and My Mum, following his mum’s diagnosis with Alzheimers and the difficulty he had finding a nursing home for her.

His dad was also diagnosed with the disease and, speaking to the Irish News about the documentary, he said he received lots of “heartfelt letters” in response to the programme.

“Both my parents had Alzheimer’s, so for about 15 years, Alzheimer’s was the main thing in my life, apart from my work and my kids.

“Towards the end of my mum’s life, I made a documentary called Me And My Mum around the issues surrounding dementia and care homes, and the reaction was extraordinary.”

He continued: “I got so many heartfelt, handwritten letters from carers and people with dementia, saying that their situation was ghastly, and something had to be done.

“So, when the Alzheimer’s Society got in touch, I was more than pleased to be an ambassador. When you have a terrible experience, there’s very little you can do on your own – large organisations can do a lot more.”

Danny John-Jules – Barrington

Danny John-Jules’ Barrington was the first character Maid Marian viewers saw on their screens when the show debuted in 1989 – with the star regularly performing songs in the programme.

Just one year before appearing in the CBBC series, Danny had risen to fame as Cat in the hit comedy Red Dwarf – but he had lots of famous cameos before then.

This included his appearance as a dancer in Wham’s Edge of Heaven Music Video, along with roles in Hollywood blockbusters Labyrinth, The Great Muppet Caper and Little Shop of Horrors.

Along with Maid Marian, Danny had roles in lots of other famous children’s TV shows including The Demon Headmaster, Bob the Builder, M.I High, The Story Makers and Kerching!

In 2018, Danny was also partnered with Amy Dowden on Strictly Come Dancing, before the pair were eliminated during week eight – though their time was marred by bullying accusations, which he denied.

He most recently appeared in Death In Paradise, along with Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators.

It is no surprise then that with such a stellar career, Danny is reported to have a total net worth of $700,000 (£551,000), according to Net Worth Post.

For more than 20 years, the star has been married to Petula Langlais, with IMDB reporting that she works as an assistant location manager in the entertainment industry.

They worked together on the 2016 short film Bucky – with their two children making appearances alongside Danny on two episodes of Death In Paradise too.

That’s not all, as Daily Express reports that Danny’s nephew is professional footballer Tyreece John-Jules, who has played for Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal FC.

Howard Lew Lewis played Rabies in the band of Merry Men – but his career could have been very different.

The star previously worked as a computer operator for the Royal Air Force (RAF), before deciding to pursue acting.

Speaking to the BBC, Howard explained that when he was offered the chance to become a manager in the RAF, “it was time to move on and became an actor.”

From there he had a long and successful acting career, which included appearances in Chelmsford 123, The Magnificent Evans, Minder, Cats Eyes, Open All Hours and The Bill, as well as opposite Tony Robinson in 1983’s The Black Adder.

He was also famous for playing Elmo Putney in BBC sitcom Brushstrokes between 1986 to 1991.

Howard’s last credited TV role was as Uncle Idris in a 2007 episode of My Family, according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB).

Away from the cameras, he was married to wife Anna Goodall with who he had one child.

In 2017, the actor revealed during an interview with the Scottish Mail that he had been diagnosed with dementia, as reported by the BBC.

One year later, fans and friends from the world of entertainment were left devastated when Howard died on January 20, 2018 at the age of 76 years old.

Following his death, Maid Marian creator Tony Robinson paid tribute to Howard in a tweet, saying: “RIP Rabies. The kind, funny and gentle Howard Lew Lewis died on Saturday. Much missed.”

The star has had roles in Flash Gordon, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Crystal, Time Bandits, Legend, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, to name a few.

He also appeared in music videos for groups such as Men Without Hats and Bananarama.

After Maid Marian, he appeared in two films in the Harry Potter series (The Philosopher’s Stone and Deathly Hallows: Part 2), along with lending his voice to the Star Wars: Battlefront II video game in 2017.

Although the video game is his last credited acting role according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Mike continues to meet fans at comic conventions across the UK.

Like his Maid Marian co-stars, Mike tends to keep his personal life private and not much is known about him away from our screens.
