Grand Tour future in doubt as James May admits he and co-stars are ‘too old’

James May admits he and his co-hosts are “getting a bit old” to do The Grand Tour.

And the ex-Top Gear star – nicknamed “Captain Slow” by co-host Jeremy Clarkson for his sedate pace of driving – says the show may have reached the end of the road.

May, 60, insisted the Amazon Prime Video series, launched in 2016, was never axed.

He told RadioTimes.com: “Some people have said we’ve been cancelled. But really we’re getting quite close to the end of our contract. We didn’t really have any particular plans to keep going because we’re all really just getting a bit old.

“It might be time to let someone else have a crack at it.”

He added: “No-one has told us to go away. It’s reaching its natural end, like parties do. There comes a point at 4am when it is over.”

May hosted Top Gear with Clarkson, 63, and Richard Hammond, 53, from 2003 to 2015.

Next up is The Grand Tour: Eurocrash special, on Prime Video on June 16, which sees the team tackle a 1,400-mile trip from Gdansk in Poland, through Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia.

And there are two more “scary” Grand Tour seasons to come.

In January of this year, Clarkson caused outrage after writing a column for The Sun which took aim at Meghan Markle.

He went on to apologise for it and it was soon reported that Prime Video would be parting ways with him, bringing an end to his shows with the streaming service.
