Tobey Maguire’s lunch tray scene in his movie Spider-Man took a whopping 156 tries to get right.
The memorable moment in the 2002 superhero flick sees Kirsten Dunst’s character Mary Jane Watson slip on a spilled drink as she strolls across the school cafeteria, sending her lunch tray flying into the air.
Tobey’s Peter Parker – who is just starting to master his Spidey senses – steps in and catches her, then catches her tray and everything on it as she exclaims: “Wow, great reflexes!”

It may have looked easy but the scene actually took a lot of work to achieve.
While many film fans may have assumed there were special effects at play, it turns out there was no CGI at all.
Tobey shot the clever stunt himself, and it took 156 tries until it was perfected.
The shooting secret was revealed in the DVD commentary for the movie a while back, with John Dykstra, who was head of the VFX team for the film, explaining: “This next gag here, where he catches all this stuff, he actually did that.”
“Pretty good,” he added.
“Take 156.”
Kirsten also confirmed that it was all Tobey and not any trickery, which she said was “impressive”.
The actress also gave fans a little insight into how it worked, sharing: “They used sticky glue stuff to stick his hand to the tray.”
Fans have been impressed by the titbit, with many marvelling at how much work it was for Tobey and co.

Tobey played the webslinger in three films – Spider-Man in 2002 and its sequels in 2007 and 2007.
The actor reprised the role years later, in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
