Kate Garraway breaks down in tears live on-air and says ‘that’s finished me off’

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway broke down in tears this week as she admitted: “That’s finished me off.”

Hosting Friday’s show (June 30) with Ben Shephard, Kate was forced to wipe away her tears as she was left sobbing.

Appearing on the show was Eurovision runner-up Sam Ryder, who had fans emotional with his rendition of Fought and Lost.

But the song simply proved too much for a sobbing Kate, who commented: “Oh my god. That has floored me. The lyrics and that voice. Sam, you’ve finished me off.”

“Oh wow!” Ben commented, asking Kate: “Have you gone? You’ve gone.”

Sam’s latest track was written for season three of comedy series Ted Lasso, and features Queen icon Brian May as a contributing artist.

Sam crooned along to his acoustic guitar on set of GMB with his latest single, which comes hot off the heels of his Eurovision track Spaceman.

The performance comes after Kate was left emotional for a whole other reason – as she was handed an MBE by Prince William, with her husband Derek Draper watching on from his wheelchair.

The pair have been through a gruelling ordeal together after Derek’s Covid-19 battle and coma, staying in hospital for a year until he was able to have the family home adapted for his wheelchair.

Kate commented on receiving the honour: “I actually feel very awkward about it all really, I don’t know why, because I’m thrilled to bits and incredibly honoured.

“But you just sort of think, ‘What? Me?’ And then you think it’s not real.”

She added to ITV News: “It’s also lovely for my mum and dad, and for Derek to be here with the children. I didn’t think it would be but you do feel very emotional – in a good way.”

Her mum and dad Gordon and Marilyn Garraway also attended the event with Kate and Derek.

Derek is now receiving 24/7 care at home, and Kate believes he first contracted coronavirus while at the Prince’s Trust Awards in March 2020.

King Charles was in attendance at the event and was diagnosed with coronavirus days later – with Kate also admitting she got “relatively close” to getting sick herself.

She said: “Around the 29/30 March, I came home and said [to Derek] ‘god you look ill’.

“He said he had a headache, numbness in his right hand, and was struggling to breathe.

“I rang Dr Hilary [Jones] and tried to get through, he talked to Derek. He said put me back on, I think you need to call an ambulance’.”
