Aled Jones forced to use his own rucksack as a loo during severe bout of diarrhoea

Songs Of Praise host Aled Jones had to use his rucksack as a loo when he had a nasty bout of the Turkey trots.

The 52-year-old got food poisoning after scoffing a “dodgy kebab” from a street seller in Istanbul.

Aled explained how he was in college at the time and had gone backpacking with a girlfriend when he was struck down by diarrhoea and vomiting.

The dad-of-two said: “My biggest travel disaster was when I went backpacking in Turkey.

“I was travelling from Bodrum to Istanbul by bus with a girl I was dating at the time.

“I got really bad food poisoning and lost about two stone. I’ll spare you the details but my backpack has not been used since.” Aled, who was ill for two week, said he was told later some kebab sellers used “meat such as yak and cat”.

He said of the trip: “It was horrendous from start to finish.”

Since then, Aled has focused on healthy eating – confirming to MailOnline in 2016 that while his weight “crept up” in his 30s, he soon shed two stone.

He told the publication: “I realised I had to do something after seeing a tweet that suggested I had ‘eaten the Snowman’. I now eat healthily Monday to Friday, but at the weekend I eat what I want and wash it down with wine because I don’t drink in the week.”

Aled also shared a grisly injury after a partial rupture of his Achilles tendon.

He was on-stage for a pantomime dress rehearsal at the time, and admitted: “Another dancer’s heel went into my left ankle and the Achilles popped. It was horrendously painful.

“I went straight to hospital but luckily there was a tiny thread of tendon still attached, which grew back eventually.

“They put me in a cast, but that makes you more susceptible to deep vein thrombosis. Unfortunately, I got one after a few weeks and my leg started to swell.”

Aled shot to fame in 1985 with his recording of Walking In The Air.

He has presented Songs Of Praise since 2004 and has a wife, Claire.
