BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay heads on holiday as fans declare star will ‘be missed’

BBC Breakfast underwent a huge shake-up as show regular Jon Kay announced a pre-planned break from the morning show.

The much-loved programme returned for another instalment on Monday (July 10) but things were looking rather different.

Usually Sally Nugent and Jon present BBC Breakfast together from Monday to Wednesday each week.

Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt then take over from Thursday to Saturday – with two stand-in presenters stepping in to front the show on a Sunday.

But for Monday’s episode – Jon, who has been with the Breakfast team since 2010, was nowhere to be seen on the famous BBC sofa.

Instead it was Ben Thompson who replaced Jon and stepped in to take the reigns alongside Sally Nugent .

On Sunday evening (July 9) Jon himself shared the news that he is taking a pre-planned break from the show.

Taking to his Twitter account, he wrote: “Enjoying some extra sleep and long-planned annual leave with the family, so no need to set my alarm clock tomorrow morning. Back on the red sofa with my BBC Breakfast family in Salford in two weeks’ time.”

And as expected, fans of BBC Breakfast had a lot to say about Jon’s absence.

“Looking forward to seeing you back in two weeks’ time,” said one viewer.

Another added: “Enjoy you time off, you and sally are great together. Look forward to seeing back in the mornings!”

Echoing their thoughts, someone else penned: “Have a lovely holiday. You will be missed, see you on my tv in a couple of weeks.”

“Enjoy! We’ll miss you though,” gushed a fourth social media user.

Jon has worked at BBC Breakfast for over ten years

The telly fave made his permanent debut on the show last year in July, when he replaced Dan Walker following his exit from the programme.

Jon has worked at the BBC for 30 years and has been with the Breakfast team since for over ten years.

He is married to former BBC News reporter and presenter Francesca Kasteliz and the pair met in 1998 while working at BBC Bristol.
