Tom Kerridge says his booze addiction was so bad he was convinced it would kill him.
The TV star drank to cope with the pressures of trying to make it as a top-class chef.
He said: “My own ambition to become a top chef nearly came at an extremely high price.

“There were pressures I put on myself as a professional when I was trying to get my first Michelin star.
“I was doing 18-hour days. It was being released every night by massively heavy drinking. Every day.
“You need that release and mine was alcohol and it was massive.” Tom quit booze at 39 because of the effect it was having on his health.”
The star, who turns 50 next week, added: “I recognised the behaviour was massively unhealthy and if I hadn’t stopped, I doubt I would have made 50.”
Tom is back on TV with The Hidden World Of Hospitality on BBC Two, starting July 27.
It comes after Tom was slammed by trolls for selling an expensive plate of fish and chips.
The culinary mastermind is known for his TV shows and owns a string of restaurants across the UK.
But one of his locations which sells a plate of fish and chips for a staggering £35 hasn’t gone down well.
The cost will get you one battered fish and some chips.
It can be purchased at Kerridge’s Fish and Chips, located at luxury department store Harrods in London.
He said: “This Market Day Fish is made with my light and crisp, gluten free batter and served with triple cooked chips.
“It includes Matson curry sauce, tartare sauce and pease pudding.”
But angry Brits weren’t too keen on forking a fortune for the price during such difficult times.

One said: “Eight chips and a tiny thin bit of fish? This is pretentious b***ocks.”
Another added: “The whole of the UK is in a shambles financially. But £35 for a scrawny bit of fish and seven or eight chips is fine.”
