“I went through a really tough divorce, and it was the most difficult thing I’ve faced on my own – and, I guess, in a spotlight,” she said.
“It’s almost like you want to hide and go into your own little cocoon.”
But the star had given a home to pet pooch Betty, who was rescued from Bosnia, and spent a lot of time looking after her and doing things with her.
She said that the dog ended up being therapeutic and credited her with saving her life.
“Having that unconditional love and having her there to help me actually get up out of bed,” Karen explained.
The TV star also said that needing to take Betty out and spending time with her, walking her and training her, helped her to “release” a lot.
The 41-year-old dance star has now moved on and has found love again with new man Jordan Wyn-Jones.
The pair they tied the knot last year.
Kevin met documentary-maker Stacey when they were paired up to compete on the BBC ballroom show in 2018.
They dazzled viewers and the judges before ultimately winning the contest together.
The following year they started dating and they welcomed a baby girl together in January this year.
