Terminator’s James Cameron ‘doesn’t fear’ AI as he declares ‘I warned you in 1984’

Terminator director James Cameron says he doesn’t fear AI conquering Hollywood.

The use of artificial intelligence is one of the main causes of a strike that has brought the Tinseltown film industry to a halt.

But screen legend Cameron, 68, whose hits include high-tech movie Avatar, believes it can’t compete with a script written with human emotion.

He said: “It’s never an issue of who wrote it, it’s a question of is it a good story? I don’t believe that a disembodied mind regurgitating what other embodied minds have said is something that’s going to move an audience.”

However he admitted: “If an AI wins an Oscar for Best Screenplay, then I think we’ve got to take them seriously.”

Elsewhere, James said to CTV news that he “warned” people in 1984 about the rise of AI through his classic film Terminator.

He said: “I warned you guys in 1984, and you didn’t listen.”

Cameron made the movie in 1984 about a cyborg assassin who travels from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor – and with the rise of AI, it’s not too far from the truth.

While there is talk of AI being used to write more films, it’s not something that Cameron has needed, after making multiple box office favourites of his own.

The director of Titanic, Terminator and Avatar is now also in talks to create a drama series on the Titan sub which went missing after going into the ocean to explore the Titanic.

A source recently told The Sun: “The Titan disaster is already being looked at as a major series for one of the world’s biggest streamers – and James is first choice for director.

“It’s a subject close to his heart.”

They added it felt like a “natural step” for Cameron to take on the Titan disaster after his successful storytelling of Titanic.
