Sinead O’Connor’s neighbours say star was ‘smiling and happy’ just days before death

Neighbours of the late Sinead O’Connor claim the Nothing Compares 2 U star was seen “smiling and happy” in the days prior to her death at the age of 56.

The legendary Irish singer’s passing was confirmed by her “devastated” family in a statement on Wednesday night (July 26), prompting tributes from people around the world.

A police statement on Thursday (July 27) reported that she had been found “unresponsive” at her home, adding that her death was “not being treated as suspicious”.

Sinead’s final Twitter posts on July 17, meanwhile, paid tribute to her son, Shane, who tragically died from suicide in 2002, aged 17.

Along with links to several songs, Sinead wrote: “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him.”

Farath Moragammanage, who lives nearby, said she had seen Sinead around the same time as the tweets – seemingly in good spirits, however.

The shocked neighbour told Ma ilOnline: “I last saw her about two weeks ago.

She seemed happy and was smiling and waved. She was with a friend and she said she was going to Brixton with a friend from Ireland. She told me she was a famous singer and she must have moved in about weeks six weeks or so ago. She was living there on her own.

“Around 5pm on Wednesday I saw a private ambulance turn up and it was there for a few hours before leaving. I didn’t make the connection until I saw the news and realised it was my neighbour. It’s so sad. I feel so sorry for her.”

Another local resident commented: “I would often see her on the street smoking a cigarette and we would exchange a few words every now and then.”

Sinead had reportedly only moved back to London at the beginning of July and called it her “home”, even showing fans her lovely new flat in videos posted on social media.

In the clip shot on July 9, she revealed that she felt very happy to be home, was writing “new tunes” and hinted that she could start touring again in the future.

The Twitter video showed off the black Martin Johnny Cash electro-acoustic guitar on the wall as well as some “beautiful” sunflowers bought for her as a housewarming gift.

She also revealed that she was excited to see a screening of Rudolf Nureyev’s Don Quixote ballet at the Barbican Centre.

London’s Inner South Coroner’s Court has confirmed that no medical cause has been given for the singer’s death and that an autopsy will be conducted, but results could take up to “several weeks”.

Sinéad- who changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat in 2018 when she converted to Islam – is survived by her three children.

However her son Shane died by suicide last year at the age of 17 after he had gone missing for two days.
