A Hollywood icon looks totally unrecognisable in a brand new snap with a bald head and a scraggly beard.

He was the poster boy of dozens of 1990s action flicks, and he’s partial to the occasional onscreen freak out.

Some would even go so far as pegging him as an American national treasure. Have you guessed who it is yet?

Nicholas Cage, 59, might have been tricky to spot thanks to his distinct new look.

The Face/Off actor’s appearance change comes as he’s set to star alongside Michael Cera and Julianne Nicholson in upcoming comedy, Dream Scenario.

In a teaser look at the upcoming movie, which debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) next month, Cage is transformed as he dons a bald cap and sports a scruffy grey beard.

The additional layers of clothing, a large furry-hooded parka jacket and a wire-framed pair of specs only add to his mystique.

He’s is set to play a humdrum professor who suddenly becomes the big name on campus, thanks to his appearance in their dreams.

TIFF’s director, Robyn Citizen, promises the National Treasure star is going to deliver “some of his finest work” yet in the upcoming film.

It’s not the first time Cage has drastically changed his look and duped the audience with his new appearance.

The actor is known for disappearing into roles and he certainly did so as Dracula in Chris McKay’s dark comedy Renfield, which came out in April.

The Academy Award winner’s skin was pale as snow, lips tinged blue and dark hair slicked back.

Gaunt-faced Nicholas’ teeth were jagged and viscous-looking, while his long fingernails finished the look.

He admitted that sometimes he was in the chair for 8 hours where “literally 20 pounds of makeup” was liberally applied to his face.
