First Nicola Thorp, now Ulrika Jonsson, this week is most definitely not Catherine Tyldesley’s week.
On Wednesday (2 August), Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley made a cheeky dig at a baker who claimed the actress’ party planners asked for free cakes in return for social media exposure.
Ahead of her 40th birthday in September, the Corrie star reportedly hired a team that made an approach to Rebecca Severs, a cake maker who owns a bakery called Three Little Birds Bakery in Keighley, West Yorkshire.
Rebecca was supposedly unaware of her client’s identity, and politely turned down the “opportunity” as a result.

The baker was asked to create two bespoke birthday cakes and a selection of 100 accompanying cupcakes for Catherine’s event.
After becoming a source of debate this week, Catherine’s extravagant request has now spark the reaction of Swedish TV presenter, Ulrika Johnsson, who was quick to take Rebecca’s side.
“Rebecca told them her mortgage provider ‘doesn’t take payment in the form of promotion on their socials’,” Ulrika wrote in a column for the Sun on Friday (4 August).
“Nor could her staff ‘feed their kids with exposure on Instagram’. A good point, extremely well made. Good for her,” she added.
According to 55-year-old Scandi beauty, Catherine’s public response to the claims gave “a clear insight into the arrogance of some ’slebs”.
Catherine hit out at Rebecca in a lengthy video message, accusing her of “craving exposure” after she published emails from the company NVRLND who were allegedly responsible for making the baked request.
The actress planners’ request stipulated in the email that the “main cake” should match the bash’s theme of “pinks, sparkles and a touch of flamingos”, whilst a second cake was needed for Catherine’s husband, Tom Pitfield, who would turn 37 on the day of the party.
“I beg your puddin’, Catherine? I don’t think she was the one craving attention,” Ulrika wrote in her column before adding:
“Rebecca had turned down engaging in social media in exchange for free cakes.
“This whole malarkey of ’slebs expecting something for nothing or a largely self-serving swap for pics and publicity is a growing trend.
“It’s cheeky, cocky and often with an utter disrespect for the businesses trying to stay afloat.
“Of course, it can work. Huge organisations love handing out their products if there’s a chance it will be seen by thousands, maybe millions, on various platforms.
“But often these are companies with big profit margins, for whom sending out frocks, beauty products or watches will not dent their bottom line.”
The controversy that has now been dubbed “cake gate” sparked a reaction from former co-star Nicola on Thursday (3 August), in an appearance on TalkTV.
“I feel sorry first and foremost for the cake woman. She’s brilliant,” the actress who played Nicola Rubinstein in Weatherfield said.
“What she said is so clever. She was like, ‘I can’t pay my staff with heart emojis on Instagram’. She’s absolutely right. She runs a business,” she added.
