Netflix’s ‘stomach-churning’ food doc Poisoned leaves fans ‘never wanting to eat again’

Netflix viewers have been left shocked more than once after watching many of the distressing documentaries exposing dark truths that are featured on the streaming platform.

But nothing could have prepared the American audience for Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food, Netflix’s new documentary that was only released earlier this week (2 August).

The documentary, which has been given a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows Director Stephanie Soechtig exposing the US food industry’s dark secrets through interviews with experts and victims’ families.

“The Netflix special aims to shed light on the dangers of bacteria, particularly E. Coli O157 and salmonella, lurking in our food supply, causing severe illnesses and fatalities,” a top reviewer on IMDB wrote.

The documentary’s official storyline reads: “A call to action for the officials who have the power to mitigate the danger caused by foodborne pathogens that kill thousands of people in the U.S. every year.”

Poisoned received a score of 6.6/10 on IMDB and is based on the 2011 book “Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat” by Jeff Benedict.

But to many viewers located in the US, the documentary hit too close to home, leaving some completely deprived of any appetite.

“I watched Poisoned on Netflix and it makes me not want to eat anything ever again,” a person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Another X user warned future viewers: “Watch Poisoned on Netflix and you will stop eating.”

One person took the documentary to heart and expressed its wish to introduce Poisoned as an obligatory educational form of content:

“Horrifying Documentary about food adulteration & diseases happened in US, not only meat, peanuts, lettuce and what not. This must be made mandatory to watch for the public. A great eye opener for me personally,” they wrote on X.

An individual chimed in: “The poisoned documentary on Netflix just makes my head hurt.

“We can’t eat sh*t, America is so awful to live in.”

The general public was struck by the heartbreaking testimony of Darin Detwiler, whose 16-month-old son Riley died from an E. coli infection originating from Jack in the Box beef patties, during the deadly Jack in the Box E. coli outbreak of 1993 in the US.

“Watching Poisoned on Netflix and hearing about this little boy who died from E. coli… yet people think I’m crazy for raising my son as a vegan,” a parent wrote on X.
