Strictly Come Dancing fans have been anticipating the line up of the new 2023 series’ casts. Unfortunately, some were quite disappointed at the announcement.
The BBC’s news of who will swap their trainers for dancing shoes have not been received well by all, with some viewers even refusing to watch this year’s season after Mr Selfridge actress Amanda Abbington was announced in the lineup.

The Sherlock actress had received some backlash earlier this year as result of making insensitive remarks about drag queens.
On Friday (4 August) the BBC Press office wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “The game is on!

“Award-winning stage and screen actor Amanda Abbington is the first celebrity confirmed for Strictly Come Dancing 2023 and “can’t wait to start”.
“Is she ready for a study in sparkles?”
Fans were quick to give an honest opinion about the news, who many judged to be quite negative.
An X user commented: “Let’s hope being around all those sparkles, diverse professionals and fellow participants in this family show allows her to reflect on her anti-trans views.

“She’s previously voiced an intolerance of flamboyantly dressed people, especially being seen by children.”
Another person wrote: “Great actress but she’s also a trans hostile hate pusher.”
A fan chimed in: “That’s such a shame.
“Who else do you have lined up ? Andrew Tate – He’s available.”
“There’s as much chance of me watching this year, as there is of me not buying coffee from Costa,” a person wrote along with a the transgender pride emoji flag.

“We won’t be watching,” a person lashed out.
A Strictly fan went on to suggest the BBC should cast ITV star India Willoughby, who happens to be Britain’s first transgender Loose Women panelist.
“Maybe for balance, India Willoughby could be invited to participate in this year’s Strictly,” the fan wrote.
Other people were confused as to how BBC bosses could cast both Amanda and Musical star, Layton Williams, an openly gay actor and LGBTQ+ advocate.

“Strictly casting Amanda Abbington, who is a terf (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) and doesn’t like drag, and then also casting Layton Williams, who’s starred in gay and drag-positive Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, doesn’t make any sense to me,” a fan wrote on X.
Last March Amanda was under social media fire after she wrote on her now-suspended X account that “people taking their children to drag queen shows have something fundamentally wrong with them.*
