DJ Arielle Free returns to BBC Radio 1 after suspension from awkward on-air spat

BBC Radio 1’s Arielle Free has returned to the airwaves after she was suspended over an on-air clash.

The star was pulled off air after calling out fellow DJ Charlie Hedges’ song choice on the Dance Anthems show, which was broadcast from Ibiza.

It was reported that she was then temporarily suspended from her usual BBC Radio slot after the row, with Sian Eleri filling in.

The clash saw the star saying that she didn’t like a track Charlie picked to play – Horsegiirl’s My Barn, My Rules.

“I expected better from you,” she said to Charlie.

“I don’t like this song… I hate this song,” she went on.

The DJ resorted to turning Arielle’s mic down as she criticised the track choice.

“Sorry, I’m taking your mic down, it’s my show, Arielle,” Charlie said.

“Have some respect, please. See you later. Get out of here.”

A spokesperson from BBC Radio 1 said after the incident: “Whilst we would not comment on individual matters, we have strict codes of behaviour for staff and presenters and any breaches are taken extremely seriously.”

Arielle took to Instagram ahead of her return on Monday (August 7), but didn’t mention the drama.

Sharing a picture from her school days, she told fans: “Tonight on your radio it’s all things chilled in the run up to tomorrow’s Scottish Highers, advanced Highers and National 5’s exam results.

“A time I remember all too well.

“The track selection tonight is designed to help take your mind away from however you may be feeling right now. So expect some soul soothers, mood boosters and loads more yumminess.

“Two whole hours of one big musical hug.

“Plus here’s a gift of the only high school picture my mum ever bought because I somehow mastered having terrible ones done every other year.
