‘I paid £50 for Madonna’s banned sex book — and one page left me gobsmacked’

It’s 1992 – baggy jeans and bomber jackets are in fashion, Aladdin and Sister Act are playing at the cinema and polarising pop star of the moment, Madonna, has just dropped a rather raunchy coffee table book.

By then, the Queen of Pop already had the attention of the public, press and even the Pope; MTV banned her Justify My Love video in 1990, and cops even threatened to arrest her in Toronto when she performed a masturbation sequence in her concert.

But having always had an appetite to shock, Madge went one step further in October 1992, all thanks to her little book.

Sealed in a condom-like Mylar sheath, and appropriately titled SEX, the spiral-bound book dropped on October 21 to accompany Madonna’s fifth studio album, Erotica.

The book broke records and got plenty of people talking

“We live in a very repressed society, and I deal with erotic themes,” Madge told the Spin in 1993, adding: “The point I try to make is: Why should we feel ashamed of our sexuality?”

I couldn’t agree more – and it’s fair to say the then-34-year-old did not feel ashamed one bit when shooting the book – which was also full to the brim of many LGBTQ+ and queer themes.

For the book, she teamed up with legendary fashion photographer Steven Meisel to do all the dirty work behind the camera, and he perfectly captured her sexual freedom.

I paid 50 quid for the raunchy book

Packed within its 128 pages, there are sizzling snaps of Madonna kitted out in fetish leather gear, as well as her shaving a man’s pubic hair, hitchhiking in Miami stark naked and her face buried deep in a man’s bum.

As an avid Madge fan myself, I forked out 50 quid on the book a few years back – and it’s on full-display in my flat – much to the shock of family members who probably are not expecting an eyeful of Madge sucking on a toe when they step into my pad.

Still, the book itself is sleek, shiny and sultry – everything you’d expect from a Madonna coffee table book.

So what can fans find inside the book that was deemed to be so raunchy it was banned in Japan for breaking censorship laws?

(It would go on to sell 150,00 copies on its first day *and* top the New York Times bestseller list, just saying…)

Madge teamed up with Steven Meisel to do all the dirty work behind the camera

Jumping straight in at the deep end, as soon as you open the book, you’re greeted by a snap of Madge sitting on a stool wearing a skimpy bondage outfit.

Captured in glossy black and white, the photo shows the chart-topper with her boobs out and sucking on one of her fingers – while another finger appears to be inside her vagina.

Several pages later and Madonna has her legs wide open with a man appearing to perform cunnilingus on her.

The coffee table book was full of saucy shots

The rest of the book includes men getting off with men, women kissing women and plenty of whips and nudity – everything but graphic intercourse.

And it wasn’t just Madonna that stripped off for the camera: the music legend recruited a slew of celebs too.

I’m talking fashion legends like Naomi Campbell and Isabella Rossellini, as well as music industry stars Big Daddy Kane and Vanilla Ice (who was dating Madonna at the time).

Madge threw a kinky party to celebrate the book’s release

One notable snap shows a naked Madonna sandwiched between Big Daddy Kane and Naomi – and the trio looks *very* comfortable with one another.

There is one page though that left me with my jaw on the floor – a completely stark naked Madonna straddling a mirror on the floor while appearing to masturbate.

Kinda takes the meaning of “loving yourself” to a whole new level if you ask me…

Madonna is no stranger to creating controversy

It’s not all just saucy snaps packed within its pages though, SEX also includes Madonna sharing her views on sex in its text.

“I like my p*ssy,” she writes: “Sometimes I stare at it in the mirror when I’m undressing.”

Then, on another page, she gushes: “See, I’m not a size queen. But it was excellent. He went down on me and I think I had an orgasm in two seconds.

“I was so turned on: it was probably the most erotic sex I ever had. But he gave me crabs.”

Wow, Charles Dickens could never, let’s be honest.
