GMB’s Richard Madeley shut down as Ranvir Singh swipes his awkward comment ‘backfired’

Lorraine’s Ranvir Singh left Good Morning Britain’s Richard Madeley momentarily speechless today (21 August) as he directed criticism towards Britney Spears, prompting backlash from viewers who accused him of sexism and ageism.

Taking over for Lorraine Kelly on her ITV talk show, Ranvir made a quick appearance on Good Morning Britain, where she touched upon Britney and the mounting worries expressed by her fans amidst her divorce to Sam Asghari.

A clip of the Baby One More Time singer was put on display during the morning segment, and showed Britney dancing in her home.

The clip quickly prompted Richard to ask about the popstar’s age, to which Ranvir replied: “I’m not the Britney correspondent, I’ve got Ross in LA to do that bit, Richard, you’re exposing me now.”

Richard’s co-host, Kate Garraway, praised Ranvir’s reaction and said she had made a “good comeback!”.

“I think she’s in her 30s,” Ranvir roughly calculated, before Richard added: “She’s in her 40s now, isn’t she?”

Ranvir countered: “Oh she’s 41, hang on a minute, I’m being told – breaking news she’s 41.”

“She looks amazing for 41,” the ITV star added, before continuing: “Anyway, plenty more coming up on Britney, Richard, you seem very invested in the story.”

Richard replied: “No, no, no – I just wonder when she’s going to stop pole dancing… You know, anyway.”

Unimpressed by the morning show presenter’s comment, Ranvir clapped back: “You’ve clearly got her Instagram,” prompting Kate to explode in laughter.

Richard explained that he was simply “reporting” what he had read previously “in the papers”.

Wanting to prove his point, the presenter held up his phone to the camera, and exclaimed: “She’s not on there, I promise!”

In a cold conclusion to the awkward exchange, Ranvir snapped back: “That backfired, didn’t it?” before straightforwardly ending with a simple: “Bye!”

The segment incited viewers’ fury as numerous individuals expressed their displeasure on X, (formerly known as Twitter).

“When is Britney going to stop pole dancing’ When you stop being a judgmental pig?!” a separate person commented.
