EastEnders fans ‘work out’ why Cindy abandoned her family in Lucy murder twist

EastEnders fans have “worked out” why Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) abandoned her family all those years ago, theorising it has something to do with her daughter’s murder.

Back in 1998, Cindy’s ex-husband Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) received the news she had died during childbirth while in prison.

However, fans discovered earlier this year that Cindy didn’t die behind bars but was instead moved to witness protection after turning informant on her cellmate, gangster Jackie Ford.

After assuming the identity of Rose, she later met George Knight (Colin Salmon) and they had two daughters, Gina (Francesca Henry) and Anna (Molly Rainford).

Ever since Cindy was revealed to be Rose Knight, fans have been speculating what made her walk out on her family and start a new life in France.

They have theorised that Cindy learned of her daughter Lucy’s (Hetti Bywater) death in 2014 and believed it was a sign from her former cellmate.

One wrote: “My guess is that when Lucy was murdered, she thought it was a ‘message’ from the woman she was hiding from, and she had to run again. I don’t know if she even knows it was Bobby”.

“OMG literally just had a thought when Lucy was first killed her actual killer wasn’t revealed for like a year so what if Cindy read about it online or something & thought it was down to the people she testified against, hence why she ran from George & the girls?,” another theorised.

Echoing this, a third shared: “She found out Lucy had died and then got paranoid that by having another family she was putting Anna and Gina in danger from the gangster family so she did a runner.

“Why she didn’t think that when she hooked back up with Ian and Peter is anyone’s guess but we’re not meant to think too hard about it lol.”

Cindy will return to Walford for the first time in 25 years on Monday (August 28).

Despite being excited about her comeback, 61-year-old Michelle admitted she was “terrified” about returning as the character she played on and off for a decade.

“Surreal. Kind of terrifying at the same time,” the former Coronation Street star said of stepping foot on the Square again for the first time.

“I suppose it’s a bit like that first night when you do a play because you get those first night nerves but you also get that amazing adrenaline feeling.

“I don’t trust people when they say they’re not nervous, I think they’re lying. I was kind of terrified but also excited at the same time”.
