Mike Tindall suffered ‘more than most from beer goggles’ on boozy nights out

Mike Tindall dived into the Daily Star’s great beer goggles debate by admitting he has had the condition “more than most”.

The husband of King Charles’ niece Zara said he had no doubt it is a genuine affliction.

The ex-England rugby international spoke out in a Good Morning Britain studio discussion about our story revealing UK and US boffins were at loggerheads over whether people appear more attractive in drink.

Asked if he had a view on the subject dad-of-three Mike, 44, said: “We’ve all been there, me more than most, most likely.”

He said chat about our tale had calmed his pre-show nerves.

“I was a bit worried when I came in,” he said. “And then there was this serious discussion about beer goggles which made me feel far more comfortable in the environment.”

Mike is known for his love of partying, previously revealing how he and Zara, 42, had a ‘boozy’ first date.

The pair partied until 2am the night before the King’s Coronation earlier this summer.

It comes as behaviour psychologist Jo Hemmings landed the decisive blow in our beer goggles debate – by revealing even flies have beer goggles.

She said a 2008 scientific study found fruit flies became “less picky” about female mates after drinking alcohol.

The Brit behavioural psychologist said new US research which found booze played no part in how attractive folk looked – known as the beer goggle effect – flew in the face of a string of previous studies.

After assessing eight pairs of pals in their 20s in a laboratory, brainboxes from Stanford University found while booze gave drinkers `Dutch courage’ to chat to sexy strangers it did not make others seem better looking.

But Jo, a dating and relationship coach, told the Daily Star the US research relied on too small a sample of subjects and was fundamentally flawed.

“It is virtually impossible to create the environment to examine the beer goggle effect in a laboratory-controlled study,” she said.

“The methodology is all wrong.” How do you create arousal from alcohol when you’re surrounded by a group of psychologists in white coats monitoring your every sip of those Sea Breezes?”

“Where is the music, the sound of people chatting, the eye contact or smile that gives you Dutch courage, your mates egging you on to approach someone? Nowhere to be found in a lab for sure.”

There have been several studies that have proven that the beer goggle effect really is a fact.”

Research on humans in 2003 and 2012 showed that alcohol affected perception, sociability, and preferences in potential sexual partners.”

“There was even a study from 2008 which revealed that drunken fruit flies became less picky about potential female mates than their sober mates!”So the research seems fairly incontrovertible.”
