US country star Breland shares UK ‘culture shock’ as he talks ‘rowdy’ crowds

US Country singer Breland has shared his biggest “culture shock” when he arrived in the UK from across the pond.

The My Truck hitmaker is embarking on his first ever headline tour of the world, calling at London, Manchester and Bristol along the way.

And though he does miss certain aspects of life in the States – including getting to watch his favourite sports – there’s one thing he just couldn’t get over.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Breland explained that it’s how the fans react while watching him on stage that came as the biggest shock.

“The level of comfort I felt on stage, that was the biggest shock for me when I came over and played my first show.

“As a performer, it’s the way that these audiences engage. There’s a very big cultural shift in how Americans participate in shows as members of an audience, and how people elsewhere in the world do.

“In America, you’re there to entertain people, but they’re not required to give you their attention or even their respect. We see all these instances of fans throwing things on stage in the US; I’ve had people throw things at me in the past, or they’ll be talking, making conversation with one another.

“On a deeper level, they might only come in knowing a couple songs and will never really challenge themselves beforehand to learn anything else. They’ll scream at you and heckle you during the show, ‘Play My Truck, that’s what we paid for!’ and you have to deal with that.”

The star said it’s a ‘culture shock’ to come in to a respectful audience

But in the UK and Europe, there’s “a bit more respect and appreciation”, Breland says.

“The crowds probably aren’t going to make as much noise, they won’t be talking much during your performance – they’re locked in, they care about the backstories of these songs, how they were written and what they mean to you.

“At the same time, they’re also down to cut loose and get a little rowdy as appropriate. There’s a better rapport and relationship that gets formed between artists and crowds out here that lends itself really well to my natural skillset as an artist.

“I have a bunch of really fun songs I can turn up to but I like to know I have the audience’s attention and not feel like I’m constantly fighting for it.”

The star admitted that he is missing the US Open while in England, divulging: “It was a bummer, because I was in the States during Wimbledon and had to wake up super early for these matches, and now I’m in the UK for the US Open!

“I’m like, ‘We need to get our touring schedule based around where I would like to be and what I would like to see!’”
