Kate, who has two children with her partner, detailed that a caregiver arrives at 8 am every morning to attend to Derek’s needs.
They work a 12-hour shift before being relieved by a second caregiver who remains with Derek until 8 am the following day.
Speaking about the difficulties she faces with Derek’s health, she told The Times: “The biggest problem is there are so many unknowns.”
She explained Derek’s choking condition, highlighting that he is unable to effectively inhale oxygen or expel carbon dioxide.

Kate explained: “[It’s] slightly poisoning his body all the time. He urgently needs respiratory rehab.”
Discussing a terrifying ordeal due to his choking issue, Kate went on: “It happened again just last weekend. For absolutely no reason he just went blue.”
She watched on in fear alongside her son as Derek’s caregivers hurried to rescue him.
Expressing her emotions at that moment, Kate remarked: “Just oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. Derek ‘sort of vomited’ and the carers then ‘high-fived Top Gun-style’.
“They knew they’d had a really near miss.”
She went on to admit that work is an escape from the constant care she provides her husband and that she feels like a “shell of a person”.
Kate added: “There are so many people who, through sheer bad luck, find themselves in the same shoes as me.
“Caring for someone you love is a privilege, and I will never give up, but I want to champion the cause that everyone in my position faces because I know people are drowning trying to navigate through the care system.
