Brooklyn 99 star ‘fulfilled childhood dream’ after launching horror in career U-turn

Joe Lo Truglio has embarked on a long career in acting, with comedies being the main genre he’s taken under his stride.

But now, two years after he wrapped up his role as Detective Charles Boyle on Brooklyn 99, he’s thrilled to be releasing his very first independent film which he directed.

The horror follows a woman, Kate, who is seeking to heal her past trauma, but she’s overwhelmed by isolation and paranoia – and she needs to face her demons.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Joe confessed the director debut and movement into horror has fulfilled his childhood dream.

He said: “I was always a big horror fan. I grew up with that genre even before comedy so this is a return to that and something I’ve been wanting to do for a very long time.”

But despite his excitement, Joe was nervous for how some of his fans might react.

He added: “I’m excited about anyone that is familiar with my acting work to just understand that I’m also excited to be part of the filmmaking community.

“I’m also a little nervous because this isn’t comedy and I know a lot of people like for a person to just stay in their lane. I feel great about this new chapter in my life.”

While the film is now wrapped and is being released on Monday, September 11, there were some challenges that came with the creation.

Joe added: “I knew it would be an independent movie, which meant we were going to have a very low budget and I was going to be financing it.”

He explained that he was looking for more niche filming locations which were also affordable – prompting them to head up to the top of a mountain for a lot of the project.

Joe had finished the filming process around the same time that Brooklyn 99 came to a close, and his co-stars have been “very supportive” all throughout the process of making the film.
