Krishnan Guru-Murthy says he needs to be ‘careful’ on Strictly as he talks health battle

Krishnan Guru-Murthy has revealed he needs to be “a little bit careful” on Strictly Come Dancing because he has a heart condition.

The journalist and presenter, 53, is taking part in the latest series of the BBC ballroom contest, where he has been paired with pro Lauren Oakley.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, he shared: “I’ve got a genetic heart condition, it’s in the family.

“It just means I have got to be a little bit careful about getting into the red zone of your heart rate.

“It doesn’t mean I can’t go to the gym, it doesn’t mean I can’t dance.”

Host Richard Madeley asked if it meant the star’s heart rate could not go beyond a certain level for too long.

And Krishnan replied: “It’s not that it can’t, it is if it stays very high for 10 minutes then it would be…”

“None of our dances are 10 minutes long so that’s lucky!” Lauren laughed.

Krishnan also told how he decided to sign up for a stint on the dancefloor after a tough few years, with the coronavirus pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine and political chaos.

“I suddenly realised this is kind of an opportunity just to have a real laugh and a lot of joy in life alongside all that,” he said.

“And you’d be stupid to say no!”

The TV star said that where some people are looking for a reinvention on the programme, for him it is just going to be “great fun”.

“I’m going to smile quite a lot,” he told Richard and his co-host Susanna Reid.
