Arlene Phillips takes subtle swipe at former judges as she begs to return to Strictly

Arlene Phillips certainly didn’t hold back during her interview on BBC Breakfast when she took a subtle swipe at her former Strictly Come Dancing judges.

During Thursday’s (September 21) visit to the BBC studios, the 48-year-old welcomed viewers back to the signature red sofa with her co-host Ben Thompson.

The presenting duo discussed some of the biggest stories hitting the headlines this morning this morning which included the concerns surrounding the Prime Ministers plans for green policies and the new studies found in patients with Alzheimer’s.

But arguably the most exciting interview the pair had on the show was with the former judge, 80, on the dance competition ahead of the launch of her new show The House of Flamenco.

She couldn’t help but share a touching tribute to the late judge and close friend Len Goodman following the touching performance dedicated in his honour during the launch show last weekend. She gushed: “Oh my gosh I thought the tribute was beautiful and I’m also so pleased that on Dancing With The Stars in America, they’re going to do a massive tribute to him too.

“It was such a loss and it was so sudden for many of us because only a few people knew, Bruno [Toniolli] knew, but few people actually knew. It was a real shock, particularly as Len and I, we were there at the pilot.

“We made the pilot and it was wonderfully, brilliantly chaotic, and Len and I spent many hours trying to form what the show would be and we were the bodies that were lucky enough to do that.” Ben later asked how their friendship blossomed throughout the four years they worked together on the ballroom competition.

He added: “When you’re on a project like that right from the beginning, I mean we know how intense Strictly is just from talking to the contestants never mind for what one of you guys have to do, and it is such a little bubble isn’t it when you work closely together? So you are inevitably forming bonds with people like Len.”

It was at this point that Arlene took a subtle swipe at her former co-stars and her tense relationship with them. She agreed: “Yeah, you form a bond with some, you actually can’t stand others but you know that’s life but you do form a bond and obviously I miss being a part of that crazy, crazy life. “

As she reflected on her time on the long-running competition, Naga reassured her that she has continued to thrive since she left the show. She added: “But you continue with that crazy life, first of all you’ve got House of Flamenco, then you’re working with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber as well.”

It comes after Naga Munchetty shared a major piece of advice to contestant Adam Thomas ahead of his first dance on the live show. The broadcaster advised him to be confident when taking to the dance floor even if he doesn’t believe he will give the best performance.

She explained: “It’s not just about – I mean, of course the dancing’s important but it’s not everything – It’s about improvement, it’s about passion, it’s about how you change isn’t it? You know this. Trust me, never go in not confident, go in determined to be the best.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see how the soap star performs during his first live performance on Saturday (September 23).
